Social-Emotional Development

Calming Strategy - Bunny Breathing

Our breathing strategy this week is called Bunny Breathing.

Hold one hand with two fingers standing tall like a peace sign to represent the bunny. Scrunch up your nose and take three short breaths. As you do this, have the bunnys ears go up and down with each breath. Hold your breath for three seconds and then exhale slowly, moving (hopping) our hand across your body as if the bunny is hopping away. Try to exhale as long as the bunny is hopping.

Cognitive Development

Measuring Length

Measure your childs height using a ruler to spark interest in measuring. Record their height on a piece paper. Show your child how to place the ruler at one end of what they are measuring and read the numeral where the item ends. Have them copy the numeral onto their paper along with a drawing or the word for the item. Encourage your child to measure and record 5 items (30 cm or less) from around the house.

Another idea:  Plant a bean seed and record its growth over time. You can soak a dried bean seed from your pantry overnight (lima beans work well).  Plant it and watch it grow!

Language Development

Rhyme Time

Practice rhyming words by reciting nursery rhymes and reading rhyming stories (Dr. Seuss has many great titles). Give your child a word like cat and seeing how many rhyming words they can come up with. Nonsense words are okay. Here is a rhyming word singing game to get you started.

Physical Literacy

Balance Challenge

Collect several stuffed animals or other soft toys and a laundry basket or a bin. Invite your child to help you toss the stuffed animals around the room. Now encourage your child to put all the stuffed animals into the basket using only one foot.

Creative Activity

Nature Chalk Rubbings

Collect a large stick, branch or rock, sidewalk chalk and a dish of water. Encourage your child to use the chalk to decorate their nature item. After a bit, give them a bowl of water to dip the chalk into and continue decorating the item. The dry and wet chalk have a different look and feel. Great activity for outside.
